FCE stands for First Certificate English. 

Students need to be at an intermediate level in order to cope with the content of this course.  The course requires a minimum of three students or can be taught on a one-to-one basis.

The course covers five papers

• The five skills – reading. writing, use of English, listening and speaking
• Vocabulary relevant to FCE topics
• Discussions on relevant FCE topics
• Aspects of grammar needed for the FCE test

Practice is given with

• A range of FCE question types and tasks in the five skills
• A step-by-step approach to building necessary strategies and skills

• Achievable test type tasks will be completed first, leading to more challenging and authentic test types.
• A broad range of language students will face either at university or in the wider community
• Suitable materials selected to match learners’ needs
• Test tips, relaxation techniques

In addition

• Regular practice tests on all five skills are provided
• These tests are used in class and for homework
• They provide opportunities for

  • Group work
  • Individual work
• Authentic FCE –type test papers are used
• Homework covers all five skill areas
• Learners are encouraged and taught skills necessary to take charge of their learning
• Assessment criteria and the FCE score system are examined.
